Chapter 9 - Breeding
Breeding is an exciting time, and takes place after
the auction has completed. At this time, the Steward will put out a second call for
retirements. This is so those stables that bought Racers in the auction but want to use
them to breed can retire them. Remember that once a horse has been retired, it can never
race again and can only be used for breeding.
There are several ways to breed. If you own a mare,
all you need to do is select a stallion to pair with that mare. If you also own a breeding
stallion, you may use your own stallion to breed. In this case, the breeding costs nothing
since you own both horses. You may opt to use a stallion owned by another player. In this
case, you will need to pay a stud fee. The stud fees for all player-owned stallions is
listed on the web site under Breeding Lists. To use another players stallion for
breeding, you must contact them by email to reserve a spot.
If you own a stallion but dont have a mare, you
may be able to lease a mare from another player. Players who are willing to lease mares
will usually advertise on the Forum, and you can contact them to arrange the fee.
You can also use list horses to breed. List stallions
and mares are real life horses, and are not owned by any player. These special horses may
only be used by sending in a donation. This is called a free breed. A free
breed means you pay no in-game breeding fees, and consists of one pair a stallion
and a mare. They can be list horses, player-owned horses, your own horses, or any
combination. Remember that any player-owned horses must be reserved with the owner. But
the fee will be free to you, and paid by the Steward instead.
You may not break up a free breed into two horses.
I.e., you may not purchase a free breed, and select a list stallion to use with your own
mare, then use the other half of the free breed to reserve a list mare to use with your
own stallion. The free breed covers one pair used together only.
If you are using a list mare, make sure your mare has
not already been reserved. Mares in red on the lists are already reserved and may not be
used.
The Steward will announce when she is ready to begin
receiving pairings for breeding, and there will be a deadline to submit them by. There is
a form on the Downloads page that you fill in with your breeding information. It is an
Excel spreadsheet, but you may also use Open Office to open and complete it. If you cannot
open the form for whatever reason, email the Steward and she will provide an alternate
means of submitting your pairings.
When filling out the form, please be complete. Use
complete stable names rather than shortened ones, and make sure you have spelled the names
of stables and horses correctly. They should be spelled exactly as they appear on the web
site. Be sure to include all fees where applicable, and to include both colt and filly
names for the foals.
When selecting names, check the Studbook and the
breeding lists to make sure the name has not already been used in the game. The Steward
may reject any name she deems unsuitable, so use good judgment when selecting names. Also
remember that all names must be 18 characters or less in length, including any spaces or
punctuation, and non-standard characters like tildas or umlauts are not allowed.
When all pairings have been received, the Steward will
process them and create the new crop of foals. When foals have been created, they will be
named based on their gender and the names submitted, and pictures and ARs for each foal
will be created as well. ARs for new foals will be emailed to their owners when they are
completed, and the new foals and their pictures will be uploaded to the web site so they
will appear in your stable page and the Studbook.
Once breeding has completed, the rollover to the next
year is processed and the new racing schedule is created and placed on the web site. At
this time, the sales system will be re-opened and stables may begin entering their horses
in races again and the cycle begins again.
Please Note: If your stable is smaller than Size 3,
and you have not sent in a donation, your stable may NOT breed. See Contributions in
Chapter 10.
